Hrvatska za Masaije

Croatia for the Maasai People is a humanitarian campaign for URGENT help to the Maasai people from Kenya. For the last 6 months, there has been no rain in their area, which is why they are facing a severe famine that is killing people and animals alike. The campaign was created as a result of the cooperation and friendship of two change makers from Kenya and Croatia, who were connected by Pope Francis.

About the campaign

The Maasai are an indigenous community in Kenya that is primarily engaged in animal husbandry. As a semi-nomadic people, the Maasai migrate with their livestock in search of greener pastures. There has been no rain in their area for the last 6 months, which is why cows are dying and people are starving.

In order to ease their current situation, they need urgent financial resources to buy food for people and animals. The amount of HRK 20,000 would provide them with enough food to survive until the rainy season.

By giving up the value of one coffee, you can literally save someone else's life, and therefore we invite you to provide financial support to the campaign and share the link with your friends.

Who saves one life, saves the whole world!

Croatia for the Maasai People - humanitarian campaign for the Maasai people. #ForTheMaasai

About campaign initiators

The campaign was created as a result of the cooperation and friendship of two change makers from Kenya and Croatia, who were connected by Pope Francis.

Samuel Lekato is a Maasai from Kenya. He graduated in economics and statistics and was the first in his village to do so. He grew up in a single-parent family, and his mother passed away 4 days after graduating. He is a young change maker and an advocate of climate measures who wants to turn his community into a sustainable one. He founded the Enduata Emaa organization and is a member of the Economy of Francesco, a social platform launched by Pope Francis with the aim of finding solutions to pressing social problems. He dreams of eradicating hunger among the Maasai through sustainable agriculture and has a mission to plant 10,000 trees.

Zoran Rajn
is the founder and president of the Center for Social Innovation and Sustainable Development (CEDIOR), CEO of the International Crowdfunding Center (ICFC) and owner of the Croinvest.eu crowdfunding platform. Like Samuel, he is a member of the Economy of Francesco and it was through this social initiative that he connected with him at this year's meeting with Pope Francis in Assisi. On that occasion, Samuel gave him the traditional costume of the Maasai people and gave him the Maasai name Lemayian, which means blessed. He readily responded to Samuel's request for assistance and decided to help him by launching the crowdfunding campaign Croatia for the Maasai People. With the desire that the Croatian people once again show a big heart and send the best possible image to the world, he invites all Croats in the country and the world to provide financial support to the campaign.

World media on drought in Kenya

World media companies (BBC, CNN World, Reuters, Washington Post, Le Monde, France 24, DW, Independent, Al Jazeera, WION - The World Is One News, 5 News - CBS, Africanews, etc.) in the past days and weeks reported an unprecedented drought in Kenya in the last four decades.

In addition to negatively affecting the availability of food and water for people and animals, the state of health and economic trends, drought has a devastating impact on biodiversity, encourages aggression and conflicts over territories, increases sexual violence and the number of child and forced marriages, prevents children and young people from attending remote teaching and payment of school fees and again leads to the question of the use of GMO crops.

"Since October 2020, four consecutive rainy seasons have failed in parts of Kenya and the Greater Horn of Africa. The UN says this is region’s worst drought in 40 years. More than four million Kenyans are “food insecure” due to the drought and over 3 million can’t get enough water to drink." - CNN World

"In pastoral areas, herders have suffered significant losses and are facing a challenge to their very way of life, with at least 1.5 million livestock reportedly having died as a result of the drought, according to the Short Rains Assessment. Pastoralists are having to increase their trekking distances by up to 150 per cent, with most now walking 20 to 35 kilometres to bring their livestock to water and forage and return home. Over 90 per cent of open water sources have dried up and those remaining are expected to last just 1 to 2 months, compared to 3 to 4 months normally." - ReliefWeb (OCHA)

Kenya has lifted a ban on genetically modified crops in response the worst drought to affect the East African region in 40 years, with authorities hoping it will improve crop yields and food security." –

"Agriculture is the backbone of Kenya's economy, employing 80% of the rural population. Kenyan farmers rely on their crops not only for income but as a source of food for their families. A survey conducted by a non-governmental organisation, Route to Food Initiative, last year showed that 57% of Kenyans do not welcome GMOs, who will now have to be persuaded." - BBC

"Women and girls are bearing the brunt of the worst drought experienced in Kenya for 40 years, which is exacerbating the risk of sexual exploitation, violence, and abuse.

An estimated 134,000 women are currently pregnant or breastfeeding in drought-affected regions of Kenya; many are now malnourished and anaemic, conditions which can be life-threatening.

There is evidence that gender-based violence, female genital mutilation, and child marriage have risen since the drought, as families marry off their girls to pay for food or cattle." - United Nations

In Ethiopia, Kenya, and Somalia, we are on the brink of an unprecedented humanitarian catastrophe,” Guleid Artan, director of the World Meteorological Organization’s climate center for East Africa, said in August. This season is the “fifth consecutive failed rainy season” in the region, he said."
Washington Post

"The Kenya Wildlife Service and other bodies counted the deaths of 205 elephants, 512 wildebeests, 381 common zebras, 51 buffalos, 49 Grevy’s zebras and 12 giraffes in the past nine months, the report states." - Le Monde

"Home to a large elephant population, northern and southern parts of Kenya have been most affected by the drought.
Kenya's wildlife is a major tourist attraction. Tourism brings around 10% of the country's economic output and employs over 2 million people.” – DW

"Elephants, for example, drink 240 liters (63.40 gallons) of water per day, according to Jim Justus Nyamu, executive director of the Elephant Neighbors Center." - France 24

"In Kenya, back-to-back seasons of below average rainfall have caused riverbeds to dry up and destroyed grasslands in game reserves, according to the tourism ministry. “The worst-affected ecosystems are home to some of Kenya’s most-visited national parks, reserves and conservancies, including the Amboseli, Tsavo and Laikipia-Samburu areas,” its report said. In an interview with the BBC in July, Kenya’s former cabinet secretary for wildlife and tourism Najib Balala said that climate change now kills 20 times as many elephants as poaching.” –
CNN

"The deaths are a “stark reminder of the devastating impact of climate change on biodiversity,” said Sophie le Clue, chief executive of ADM Capital Foundation, an environmental nonprofit organization. “The world is facing a biodiversity crisis as we face unprecedented species extinctions globally,” she said, adding that the problem “remains far from being a priority on political agendas." - Washington Post

Use of financial resources

The collected funds will be used to buy food for people and animals in Samuel's village.

If more than HRK 20,000 is collected, the funds will be donated to other rural Maasai communities equally affected by the drought, as well as used for children's education (paying school fees, ensuring daily meals and buying clothes, shoes, books and school supplies).

Digital thank you note with the coat of arms and colors of Kenya in Croatian.

Highlight the thank you note on your social networks or in your business premises and invite others to follow your example and provide financial support to the campaign.

Pritom će izvesti svoj tradicionalni ples, demonstrirati kako pale vatru, pokazati svoje kuće od blata i trave i objasniti različite aspekte tradicije.
